Save the Date for the Wisconsin Burn Boss Academy!

We are delighted to announce a new training program addressing a critical need for more prescribed fire leadership in Wisconsin. The Wisconsin Burn Boss Academy (WBBA) is a five-day course for emerging burn leaders, set for September 22-26 at UW-Stevens Point’s Treehaven center in Tomahawk, WI. Save the date and stay tuned for a registration announcement!

The WBBA is designed for professionals with squad/line boss experience seeking to gain valuable high-level skills for a career in fire leadership, with a special emphasis on Wisconsin landscapes and fire culture. The course will consist of lecture content and hands-on classroom exercises spanning four modules: Fire Ecology, Fire Behavior and Fuels, Writing a Burn Plan, and Leading a Prescribed Burn. The curriculum will NOT include live fire exercises.

The WBBA is an alternative to high-level NWCG prescribed fire training. It was designed to fulfill the training requirements for the Wisconsin Certified Burn Boss Program, which is currently in the final stages of development and has not yet been officially announced. Read more about this program and its current status on our Implementation and Standards Committee page.

Spots will be limited to ensure an ideal student-to-instructor ratio. Applications will open later this year for WPFC members, then to the general public shortly after.
