The Wisconsin Burn Boss Academy application form is now live! The first offering of this new program is set for September 22-26, 2025 at Treehaven Conference Center near Tomahawk, WI. Non-WPFC-members may apply starting May 30, and all applications must be submitted by July 31.
The Burn Boss Academy is an intense 5 day course that provides the training required to become a Wisconsin Certified Burn Boss, in four major topics:
- Fire Ecology
- Fuels and Fire Behavior
- Writing a Burn Plan
- Leading a Prescribed Burn
The Academy is designed for professionals with squad boss experience seeking to gain valuable high-level skills for a career in fire leadership, with a special emphasis on Wisconsin landscapes and fire culture. The course will consist of lecture content and hands-on classroom exercises. There will be pre-work assigned consisting of reading, viewing videos, and completing written exercises. The curriculum will NOT include live fire exercises. (Live fire experience for burn boss trainees is addressed through separate mentorship experiences.)
